Accessible Formats
Accessible formats provide organisations with the means to communicate with their clients who are unable to access print.
It is important to remember that not everyone can see or understand the written word. In addition, it is equally important that you are able to communicate your documents / information to these individuals, especially if they are of a sensitive or confidential nature. By incorporating accessible formats into your everyday business communication methods you will automatically meet the needs of all your clients.
The Benefits
- Compliance with Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) legislation. From the 1st October 2004, part 3 of the DDA 1995 has required businesses and other organisations are to take reasonable steps to tackle physical features that act as a barrier to disabled people.
- Access to your service includes offering accessible information formats, i.e. Braille, Large Print, Audio. It’s about making your services easily accessible regardless of the level of ability an individual has. Under new legislation all services are to be equal and not favour those who are more able bodied.
- There are 10 million disabled individuals in the UK, with an estimated spending power of £50 billion per year. You would therefore have the means to promote your services / products to an extra 10 million potential customers (Disability Rights Commission, 2007).
- Increase your organisations Public Relationship Profile by demonstrating that not only do you and your organisation comply with the law, are aware of the diverse range of requirements within society, but that you and your organisation acknowledge and act with Social Responsibility.
- Accessibility will benefit all your customers and enhance your reputation as a provider with a high level of customer service.
- Offering your information in accessible formats will enhance the public’s perception of you and your organisation, demonstrating that for you your customers are of primary importance and come first.
